Pakistan Extends Fiber Optic Cable ADSS

Pakistan is expanding its fiber optic network using ADSS cables to enhance broadband connectivity and prepare for 5G and IoT deployment.National Fiberization Policy and Expansion GoalsPakistan's Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT) has announced plans to extend fiber-optic connectivity to 7.5 million households and achieve 80% fiber-to-the-site (FTTS) coverage within the next five years under the National Fiberization Policy . Currently, Pakistan has over 211,000 kilometers of optical fiber, including 75,967 km of long-haul and 135,506 km of metro fiber, but this is insufficient for growing digital demand .Role of ADSS CablesTo support this expansion, Pakistan is deploying ADSS (All Dielectric Self-Supporting) aerial optical fiber cables, which are ideal for high-performance aerial environments such as power transmission and distribution networks . ADSS cables are suspended from poles or towers without requiring metallic support, making them suitable for both telecommunication and power outside plant applications. Their self-supporting design reduces installation complexity and enhances durability in challenging outdoor conditions .Implementation and FundingThe government has established a Project Management Unit (PMU) to oversee policy implementation and recruit consultancy firms to finalize the framework . The plan encourages private sector investment, standardizes right-of-way approvals, and promotes infrastructure sharing to accelerate deployment . Additionally, the Universal Service Fund (USF) is rolling out 2,000 km of optical fiber in 2024-25 to connect underserved and rural areas, complementing the broader national expansion . This effort also supports backhaul for existing 3G/4G networks and lays the groundwork for future 5G services .Expected ImpactThe fiber optic expansion is projected to boost the ICT sector by 7.2%, create 80,000 jobs in the first year, and reduce import dependency on fiber optic components by 30% through local manufacturing incentives .
