U.S. data centers consumed approximately 183 TWh of electricity in 2024, representing over 4% of national electricity use, with projections to reach up to 12% by 2030 due to AI and hyperscale expansion.Current Energy ConsumptionIn 2024, U.S. data centers used 183 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, roughly equivalent to the annual electricity demand of Pakistan, accounting for more than 4% of total U.S. electricity consumption. Hyperscale and cloud data centers, which host thousands of servers, are the largest contributors, consuming 60–70% of total data center load. About 45% of energy powers IT equipment, while 38–40% is used for cooling, with the remainder for power conditioning, networking, storage, and lighting .Drivers of Energy DemandThe surge in energy use is largely driven by AI workloads, particularly generative AI (gen AI) models, which require high-density GPU and CPU servers. Training large language models (LLMs) can consume 324 MWh to 1,287 MWh per training run, and even a single AI prompt can use 10–100 times more electricity than a typical internet search . Hyperscale data centers are expanding rapidly, with rack power density expected to increase from 36 kW in 2023 to 50 kW by 2027 .Future ProjectionsData center electricity demand is projected to double or triple by 2028, potentially reaching 426–580 TWh, or up to 12% of U.S. electricity consumption. Globally, AI data centers' annual power consumption is expected to reach 90 TWh by 2026, with worldwide data center electricity potentially doubling to 1,065 TWh by 2030 if efficiency improvements are not realized .Energy Sources and SustainabilityAs of 2024, natural gas supplied over 40% of U.S. data center electricity, renewables 24%, nuclear 20%, and coal 15%. Many companies are investing in carbon-free energy sources and pursuing net-zero targets. Onsite generation and off-grid solutions are being explored, with one-third of data centers projected to be fully off-grid by 2030 . States like Illinois are incentivizing renewable energy adoption for data centers .Water and Environmental ImpactData centers also consume significant water for cooling, with 17 billion gallons used in 2023, primarily by hyperscale and colocation facilities. By 2028, hyperscale centers alone may use 16–33 billion gallons annually.
