Optical Module ACT Interface

The ACT optical module interface provides a hot-pluggable connection between network equipment and fiber optic cables, supporting flexible, high-bandwidth communication with real-time diagnostics.Overview of ACT Optical ModulesACT Connectivity offers SFP (Small Form Factor Pluggable) optical modules that serve as the interface between fiber optic cables and network devices such as switches, routers, servers, and storage systems . These modules are hot-swappable, meaning they can be inserted or removed without powering down the equipment, ensuring continuous network operation . The SFP standard is defined under a Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), which guarantees compatibility across different manufacturers .Electrical and Optical InterfacesAn ACT optical module has two main interfaces:Electrical Interface: Connects to the internal circuitry of the network device. It transmits and receives digital signals that are processed by the module's internal driver and receiver circuits .Optical Interface: Connects to the fiber optic cable, converting electrical signals into optical signals for transmission (via the Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly, TOSA) and converting received optical signals back into electrical signals (via the Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly, ROSA), . The TOSA typically uses a laser diode for high-speed transmission, while the ROSA uses a photodetector such as a PIN diode or avalanche photodiode for sensitive reception .Key FeaturesFlexibility: ACT SFP modules allow easy adaptation to different fiber types (single-mode or multimode), distances, speeds (1G, 10G, etc.), and connector types (LC, SC, etc.) without replacing the network device .Hot-Swappable: Modules can be replaced or upgraded without interrupting network operations, maintaining continuity .Digital Diagnostics: Many ACT modules support Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), providing real-time monitoring of parameters such as operating voltage, temperature, transmitted and received optical power, and laser bias current . This ensures reliable performance and simplifies network maintenance.ApplicationsACT optical modules are widely used in data centers, enterprise networks, and industrial environments. They enable high-bandwidth communication, support flexible network upgrades, and ensure interoperability across devices from different vendors . Their modular design allows service providers and IT administrators to scale networks efficiently while maintaining performance and reliability. In summary, the ACT optical module interface combines a standardized electrical connection with a fiber-optic interface, offering hot-swappable flexibility, real-time diagnostics, and broad compatibility for modern high-speed networks .
